PORTLAND, Ore. — The No. 1 seed Texas women’s basketball team held Gonzaga to 18 first half points and 33 points under their season scoring average in a 69-47 victory in the Sweet 16 matchup on Friday at Moda Center.
Aaliyah Moore posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and added a career-high six assists. Shaylee Gonzales scored 15 points and Shay Holle added 12 points.
The Longhorns (33-4) used a 10-0 run to go up 14-7 in the first quarter on a 3-pointer from Shay Holle. Texas finished the quarter with a 14-2 run as DeYona Gaston hit a jumper as time expired.
Texas outscored Gonzaga 19-9 in the second quarter to take a 37-18 lead into the halftime break.
After Gonzaga went on a 9-0 run in the third quarter, Texas came back with an 8-0 run of their own and led 54-35 going into the fourth quarter.
Khadija Faye scored six of her eight points in the fourth quarter for the Longhorns. Faye sank a pair of free-throws to put Texas up 65-44 with 3:17 to play in the game.
Faye made another pair of free-throws and Madison Booker made a driving layup to put Texas up 69-44.
Postgame Notes
• With the win Texas improved to 33-4 on the season. The 33 wins is the most in a season for Texas since the 1985-86 season. The Longhorns have now won 15 of their last 16 games.
• Texas advances to the Elite Eight for the third time in the last four seasons. Texas head coach Vic Schaefer has guided teams to the Elite Eight in six of his last seven seasons.
• Texas held Gonzaga to single digits in points in the first and second quarters. Texas has held opponents to single digits in a quarter 26 times this season.
• The Longhorns limited Gonzaga to 13-of-49 (26.5 percent) from the field for the game and 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from 3-point range. The Longhorns are 22-1 this season when they hold an opponent under 40 percent shooting.
• Texas held a significant advantage in points in the paint 36-18 for the game.
• The Longhorns shot 26-of-52 (50 percent) from the field. It was the 16th game this season Texas has shot 50 percent or better from the field.
• Texas connected on 12-of-15 from the free-throw line for 80 percent.
