#MUBB Downs Colorado 81-77 For Trip To Sweet 16

The No. 8/8 Marquette University men’s basketball team (27-9) continued play at the 2024 NCAA Championship with an 81-77 win against Colorado (26-11) on Sunday afternoon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.
 
Guard Kam Jones led the way offensively with 18 points and guard Tyler Kolek chipped in 21 points and 11 assists for his second-straight double-double and seventh of the season.

Witht the win, the Golden Eagles advanced to the Sweet 16 for the 17th time in school history and first since 2013.

 

Colorado opened the second half with a 10-2 run and would eventually take the lead 55-54 with 14:41 on the clock, erasing the 11-point halftime deficit.  The Buffaloes, one of the nation’s top shooting teams, started the half 9-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-7 from deep.  The scored was knotted at 74-74

 

Marquette led by as many as 12 points in the first half and 45-34 at the intermission.  The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 22-11 advantage, shooting over 70 percent from the floor in the opening minutes, and finished 67.9 percent from the floor for the half.  Jones led the way offensively with 16 points.

 

Notables:

  • Marquette and Colorado were meeting for just the fifth time and first since 1987
  • MU’s first-half field goal percentage of 67.9 percent is highest of the season
  • Guard Tyler Kolek is the third player in the last 10 years with a combined 30 points and 20 assists in two NCAA tournament games (Markquis Nowell – Kansas Stats – 3 times, 2023, Ja Morant – Murray State, 2019)
