FLORENCE, Ky. (WXIX) – Like everything around Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, his new blonde haircut was the talk of the internet when he arrived for training camp on Tuesday.
Photos of Burrow’s new look were quickly shared across the internet and social media. The man behind Burrow’s new look, Darnell Bonner of Nell’s Barbershop in Florence, said his most famous customer dropped the idea during a previous trim.
“He sprung it up on me one day,” Bonner said. “I was like listen, if you’re ready, we’ll do it, I’m down.”
Bonner believes his customers see their hair as an extension of themselves.
“Hair is definitely an extension of who you are,” Bonner said. “Kind of like a portrayal of what you want your image to be. With him, he’s shown you don’t know what’s coming next.”
While Burrow doesn’t follow trends, he has started them.
“We’re going to be flooded with the Burrow bleached buzz cut,” Bonner said. “It’s no longer just the bleached buzz, it’s going to be the Burrow bleached buzz. I anticipate a big wave of that so we’re going to have to adjust our books a bit to take on that overflow. I’m sure it’s coming.”
Bonner said anyone who is thinking of getting the Burrow look has to know how to wear it.
“You got to rock it,” Bonner said. “You got to confidently rock it whatever you do. In today’s era, everybody is doing something new. Everybody is doing something so individual, so personalized. So just rock it. Own it.
Bonner began cutting hair when he was young and out of what he calls necessity.
“I had a white stepdad,” Bonner said. “He kept giving me the white man’s cut and all of my black friends would make fun of me, so I had to learn to cut my own hair. Next thing you know I fell in love with it. All my friends were asking, ‘Hey, can you cut me up before school? Can you cut me up before we go out?’”
Anyone wanting a Burrow Bleached Buzzcut can schedule an appointment at Nell’s Barbershop, although it may be a challenge to get on the list.
